Flash Steam in London

Salut!
Voici mon dernier \'Flash Steam\' installation de moteur et de la chaudière. C'est un \'Stuart BB10\' des années 1930. la chaudière est de 7 mètres de tube cuivre 4,7 mm. les brûleurs sont fabriqués à partir de camping gaz brûleurs et conteneurs de café. Il est maintenant étant équipé d'un échangeur de chaleur et condenseur (pas un \'chuff pot\' mais un système entièrement à condensation avec pompe à turbine), ainsi qu'un générateur / manomètre pour tester.

here is my latest 'Flash Steam' engine and boiler setup.

it is a 'Stuart BB10' from the 1930s.

the boiler is 7 metres of 4.7mm copper tube.

the burners are made from camping gaz burners and coffee containers.

it is now being fitted with a heat exchanger and condenser (not a 'chuff pot' but a fully condensing system with turbine pump), as well as a generator/ manometer for testing purposes.

Tout simplement étonnant.
Cette démonstration remet bien en cause quelques idées que j'avais.
Manifestement , un simple bruleur au butane suffit à produire suffisamment de vapeur pour entrainer une machine alternative!
Il n'y a pas de "water lock" et le débit varie en fonction de l'ouverture de la vanne.
Tout simplement "amazing".

here is the heart of my system - the water separator.



the basic principles are thus--->

1. water doesn't like changing direction. the wet steam enters at the side, and is flung round in a vortex, which throws the water out. dry steam goes up the pipe in the middle. the container is machined from brass, and hydraulically pressure tested to 200 PSI.

2. due to the Bernoulli effect (i think?) the tiny hole at the bottom allows the drain to be open, and the water squirts out before the steam does. it also works well as a throttle. and is really useful when starting up and shutting down.

by removing the pump duties from the steam engine, you break a 'harmonic feedback cycle' that flash steam plants seem to be prone to when run off geared down pumps.

a flash steam coil can be thought of as a very long, thin flute, or church organ pipe. harmonic resonance seems to be important!! i suspect everything needs to be INHARMONIC so as to avoid feedback/resonance. i believe HARMONIC resonances to be one of the causes of surging in flash steam systems.

ceci est ma nouvelle configuration de la chaudière . il est une bobine double , configuration verticale . l'eau coule à contre-courant , à savoir du froid vers la chaleur.

les deux bobines sont supportées par la conduite d'eau froide à l'entrée qui fonctionne en dessous de chacun d'eux.

de publier des photos mal quand je peux les trouver .

this is my new boiler configuration. it is a twin coil, vertical configuration. the water runs counterflow, i.e. from the cold towards the heat.

the two coils are supported by the cold water pipe on the input that runs underneath both of them.

this is the engine for the Hydroplane. i think it is from the 20s or 30s. what a Beast! :D

one more thing - flash steam does not like digital electronics! the high velocity steam and all the dissimilar metals create a kind of semiconductor/ crystal radio transmitter effect at RF frequencies that interferes with digital electronics. YOU MUST GROUND YOUR STEAMPLANT!

on a boat you do that through the propeller shaft.

this caused me lots of head scratching!!

flash steam is really easy. the basic trick is balancing the heat input to the water input. then you get maximum steam. my water separator acts as a sort of steam buffer, conditioning the steam before it reaches the engine. it is nice, but not essential.

all you need is a coil, a pump, and some heat.
it will work!
maybe not brilliantly, the first time you try it, but with experimentation and perseverance then flash steam is a very rewarding experience!

the first time you have a boiler explosion is normally quite disappointing. it sounds like a bottle of beer being opened...

vapeur instantanée est vraiment facile . le truc de base est d'équilibrer l'apport de chaleur à l'entrée de l'eau . alors vous obtenez une vapeur maximale . mon séparateur d'eau agit comme une sorte de tampon de vapeur, le conditionnement de la vapeur d'eau avant d'atteindre le moteur. il est agréable , mais pas indispensable.

tout ce que vous avez besoin est une bobine , une pompe , et un peu de chaleur .
ça va marcher!
peut-être pas avec brio , la première fois que vous essayez, mais avec l'expérimentation et de la persévérance , puis la vapeur instantanée est une expérience très enrichissante !

la première fois que vous avez une explosion de la chaudière est normalement assez décevant . cela ressemble à une bouteille de bière en cours d'ouverture ... hehehehe!

the most important thing is to match the pump to the coil to the engine. how you do that for any particular engine, i have no idea. this one steamed the BB10 quite nicely just using a normal plumbers blowtorch firing down the middle.
