Hello!
NAN! Mon cher Yves!

Hullo KBIO....the [last] tests look good..
The first image shows a burner with the jet carrier tube orientated @ 1:00 o'clock.
This also shows the brass n shaped plate forced between the end of the burner jet body and the gas tank. The gas tank also displays just under 2 Bar of gas pressure
Do you have a cheap [$20.00] digital laser pyrometer?.......you may well find, you are transferring colder air via this brass plate than of the ambient atmosphere........I find they are of great use in understanding the actual temperatures of the steam plant including steam inlet and exhaust temperatures
The other images show a different burner with the gas tube coiled around the gas burner jet body and the gas inlet @ 9:00 o'clock, and also interconnected to an external gas Primus type tank
Was there a reason to trial the ceramic gas burner?.....
In the test there also appear to be steam about the engine but not in the chimney
I do look forward to the trials on the water

Re: Le canot vapeur de KBIO! Baptisé le Yar.
Hello Derek!
You have an eagle eye !
The first burner installed is a ceramic one, that I had in my drawer for years. It is a McSteam, but too weak for my boiler.
The copper plate (U shape) between the burner and the gas tank is a thermic bridge, bringing some heat to this tank and building up the pressure in it.
At least, maintaining it. That works good, but still , my burner remained weak.
The ambiant temp was a bit low: 12°C, so I had to use BuPro 30/70 to supply the gas with stable pressure. Still : not enough!
So I decided to manufacture a down sized Bobino's burner, when I found an old trash burner in my "Fu.. up box!).
The flare was too sharp and not ideal for this job. So, I cut the nose to make it shorter , and I enlarged the center by 1mm, to slow down the gas mixture speed escape. Looks good!
The result is good enough to make the job. The flare is thicker et less "nervous" .So I leave it. The boiler builds up pressure to 3 bars within 8 min and the steam production on the table is steady with 80/90% of full RPM.
The gas tank pressure , filled up with BuPro, is stable when wide open to the jet +/- .35 mm. Note, that I tried liquid phase to supply the burner, but I kept plugging the jet with the debris from the bottom. This, to explain the coil around the burner, I am in gaseous phase.
Concerning my steam escape; it is not fantastic, as the skipper will breath the vapors that will not be worst than an old Volkswagen exaust , and may end up with a nagging cough!!! I have to do something on that. Probably an extention with a small pipe wich will pass over the awning (and make it shitty!! )
As soon as the sun is back and the water temp is "civilized", I shall go make some trial in my favorite pond, close to my favorite pub!!
I let you know anyway.
Have a good day.
Cheers!

Dear KBIO...... I for your sense of humour .....they say like minds like same words
1. Macsteam burner........I was under the impression that all of the components manufactured by Mr Abbot were 1st Class......possibly a compatibility issue?
2. Volkswagen exhaust ...yes I am sure you will make modifications to send this mist to the sky
3. Tests from today....would the same steam pressure and volume not produce 1/3 of the RPM in an actual water test?.....do you have the method of understanding this?
I have and use a $20.00 digital laser pyrometer, a $20.00 digital laser tachometer and a $20.00 digital weight scale set to 7kg....[the latter to understand the volume/weight of gas used/consumed]
Others laugh..... and say I am silly for using such items for model engineering......I believe they are the fools
I will post an e-mail to you with the images of my humble technical equipment
Derek ....[having had a for you @ 30 degrees @ home today in Australia.....]

Re: Le canot vapeur de KBIO! Baptisé le Yar.
Hello Derek!
Mike Abbot used to manufacture very good products. I just said that the burner was weak for my boiler.
But for the history, when I bought this burner with the boiler going along, it was very hard to rise the temp/Pres.
I told Mike, who admitted that, as he tried a new ceramic supplier, this one did not give him satisfaction.
He sent me another burner right away. The right one this time, working perfectly.
Excellent response!
The only reproach that I would do concerning British boilers, is the weight. The thickness of the copper is too much.
But you know, the Tommies, don't you? They cover their ar.. so much that they are able to build a wall around it, to be safe.
Another story! (But keep it for you)!
When I was working in Lybia, , I had several rigs waiting for me. I had no equipment available to do the job (standing for maintenance in the mechanic shop) , and the clients were upset and complained to my boss.
The chief mechanic was an English (a good boy though, with whom, I am in still contact, 20 years after) and as usual, before to take any decision, we have to have a meeting with the different persons involved.
You know, how they are, they have a meeting, they have a cup of tea, and after some time, they decide of the date of another meeting to take an eventual decision!
My mechanic friend was a bit upset, as he had the pressure on him to get my units ,off the mechanic shop. Usual blabla, concerning the lack of people, spares parts delays, and so on ....
At the end of the meeting, when come my turn to talk, I had everybody laughing when I said:
-" The problem with you brits, is that you put the mechanics in the kitchen and the cooks in the mechanic shop! So at the end, nothing works and we eat sh..t!"
Two days later , my crews were hitting the road , back to work.
Now, my friend pulls my leg every time that we lose against England in rugby.. And this happens too often!!
This is fair!
I have no way to find out what would be the losses in RPM when sailing in the water. I know, it exists some electronic devices that send all kind of signals back to the radio, but I ain't get any. Too lazy to install.
I may ask Vap38 to work something out . He would be pleased, I am sure.
On your side, you are right to make measurements and get datas of what you are doing. This the best way to find out what is going wrong, or sometime good. We should all do that!
Enjoy the sun and send us some, please!
Cheers Derek!

Re: Le canot vapeur de KBIO! Baptisé le Yar.
Salut!
Cordialement.

Hullo KBIO.......
We see from the images 1 & 2 from this morning you have moved the mamometer gauge to above the boiler steam discharge at the back end of the boiler....Does this now have a syphon tube?
The obvious disadvantage is that you must lift the deck to check the water level
For the Captain to have Less steam in his face is good an would make appearance of the engine please onlookers
So, for my thoughts...... ...all steam components are beautiful and should be seen if possible
I prefer the original open launch concept

Re: Le canot vapeur de KBIO! Baptisé le Yar.
Hello

A bientôt
Emmanuel

Hello!
Elle pèse 3.6 kg "all wet".
Je dois refaire un essai pour confirmer . Je vous tiens au courant.
